“Honor among thieves is the ancestor of all honor.”
At the end of the European wars, during the Renaissance era, many disbanded crews turned to the life of pirates. Piracy has always been a well-known type of thieves and much ink has flown to tell their stories. Stealing from the Crown, crippling trade routes and spreading terror over the Seven Seas, pirates have always been depicted as evil.
However, amongst renaissance pirates, other traits flowed through their veins as well: pride, honor, and a sense for beauty. Trying to steal the most expensive of treasures, building a name and reputation, giving their ships elegant names…
Pirates during the Renaissance era were always surrounded by these mixed sensations. Darkness on the one hand, elegant and pure traits on the other hand. To depict this dual way of life, the Vagabondo starts off with a dark canvas, bejewelled with symbols of purity, in an elegant, floral context.
Vagabondo means thief. It shows books should not be judged by their cover. A first impression, might make you blind for what is behind it - for there is honor among thieves.
