“Read the flight of your arrow if you want to know your future”
-Alessandro Baricco
Arrows are not only interesting from a military point of view. The Renaissance era does indeed mark a shift from archery towards the widespread use of gunpowder-based weaponry. However, arrows have a way deeper meaning in the ancient times. Arrows have namely been used in Renaissance art as symbols for both love and pain.
On the love side of the arrow concept, we immediately think of Cupid (or Amor / Eros), who could, with a singly sting of his arrows make any person fall in love. The duality between love and lust make for very interesting stories, such as the story of Venus and Adonis.
However, an arrow’s more sinister meaning is that of pain, or punishment. Many times have we discovered Renaissance paintings with people tortured, in pain or dead, caused by arrows. One figure that comes to mind in this scenario is that of Saint Sebastian, who, as a member of the Imperial Guard, was punished for his faith in the christian God.
The Freccia design was inspired by this polar opposite meanings of one and the same symbol. The outer bands symbolise love, whilst the inner band, going in the opposite direction represents pain, intertwined and deeply rooted within love. The difference between love and pain might appear as complete opposites - or are they in fact, closer to each other as one might think?
Whatever the answer to that question may be, we have to shoot the arrow one way or another. Shoot it straight, follow its flight, and let it guide your future.
