Firenze was no exception to the Renaissance era in its divided nature. The people of Renaissance Firenze were divided in four different social classes: the nobles, the merchants, the tradesmen and the unskilled workers.

The nobles controlled most of the city’s land, hence the people were dependent on their goodwill.

Of course, this would lead to a multitude of tensions in all different ways, leaving the city divided within its borders.
